As we step into September, it’s a great time for leaders to reflect on an often misunderstood yet incredibly powerful principle: submission. In the fast-paced world of leadership, where decisions need to be made quickly and confidently, submission can sometimes be viewed as a sign of weakness or indecision. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Submission, when understood correctly, is a powerful tool that enhances a leader's ability to grow, lead, and inspire others. Let’s explore how this concept can transform your leadership journey this season.
What is Submission in Leadership?
At its core, submission is not about losing your voice or authority. Instead, it is about recognizing the value of guidance, accountability, and humility in your leadership. Whether in the workplace, in faith, or in personal growth, submission involves aligning yourself under the wisdom, experience, or authority of others for the sake of growth and development.
For leaders, this means accepting that no one person has all the answers. Even at the highest levels, seeking counsel and submitting to authority demonstrates strength, humility, and a desire to improve.
The Benefits of Submission for Leaders
Wisdom and Growth: Submission allows leaders to draw from the experience and knowledge of others. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety." By submitting to the counsel of those with more experience or insight, leaders are equipped to make wiser decisions, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and grow in wisdom.
Accountability: Leaders who submit to authority understand the importance of accountability. Hebrews 13:17 tells us, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls." This accountability creates a safeguard against unethical or harmful behavior. It ensures that leaders remain aligned with the values and mission of the organization or community they serve.
Cultivating Humility: Leadership without submission can lead to pride, which the Bible warns against in James 4:6, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Submitting to authority fosters humility, showing that even as a leader, you are open to learning, growing, and receiving direction. This humility, in turn, builds trust and credibility with your team.
Strengthened Unity: Submitting to authority fosters unity within a team or organization. Romans 13:1 reminds us that "there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." By honoring established leadership and authority, you create a culture of respect and unity, which is vital for organizational success.
Biblical Submission as a Leadership Model
For leaders of faith, submission is a biblical mandate that yields spiritual and practical rewards. Jesus Himself exemplified this when He said in John 6:38, "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of Him who sent me." Jesus' submission to the Father's will was not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of His strength, purpose, and alignment with a higher mission.
Similarly, in leadership, submitting to authority—whether it’s God, mentors, or those placed in positions of oversight—enables leaders to stay on course and fulfill their greater purpose.
Submission: A Key to Servant Leadership
In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesus redefined greatness in leadership. He said, "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant." Submission is central to servant leadership. It's about placing the needs of others above your own and recognizing that your leadership role is not about power but about service.
When leaders submit, they model the type of servant leadership that fosters a healthy work culture, encourages collaboration, and empowers others to reach their potential.
Applying Submission to Your Leadership Today
As we navigate through the fall season, consider how you can incorporate submission into your leadership practice:
Seek Out Mentors: Find trusted leaders or advisers who can offer you counsel and accountability. Be open to their feedback and guidance.
Model Humility: Show your team that submission is a strength, not a weakness. When appropriate, admit when you don’t have all the answers and actively seek the insights of others.
Align Spiritually: For faith-based leaders, make a renewed commitment to submit your leadership decisions to God’s will. Spend time in prayer, seeking His guidance for your next steps.
Serve First: As a leader, find opportunities to serve those under your leadership. Follow the example of Christ by placing their needs above your own.
This September, let submission become your leadership advantage. When we learn to submit to authority—whether spiritual, organizational, or personal—we open the door to greater wisdom, accountability, and unity. Submission is not the forfeiting of power but the channeling of it in a way that serves both the leader and those they lead. Embrace it, and watch how it transforms your leadership journey.
Let’s lead with humility and strength, fully embracing the power of submission.
